Once a vacant ‘Brownfield,’ Gateway West is a located at one of the key entrances to the City of Reading just over the bridge from thriving West Reading. It was the culmination of a 20-year effort by City of Reading agencies to revitalize a long-blighted section of the City. The development consists of three different unit types, including interlocking townhouses with individual attached garages, walk-up apartments, and three-bedroom townhouses, all of which have individual entrances and on-site parking. The project had extensive support from the City, County, and Reading Redevelopment Authority. The sites are included in the Qualified Census Tract, a Keystone Opportunity Zone, and a Redevelopment Area. Much of the site was complicated by the need for environmental remediation, in large part funded through an Industrial Site Reuse Program grant.
